在回忆过去的事情,马塞尔·普鲁斯特写道,“我们不提供智慧,我们必须发现它自己,在旷野之旅,没有人可以为我们……”This sentiment handily applies to the unlikely and sometimes circuitous paths many architects and interior designers take toward achieving success in the design industry. Naturally, a love for visual beauty is a prerequisite, and while many have faced similar obstacles and accomplishments along the way—from getting their foot in the door to striking out on their own to getting published—no two trajectories are alike. We talked to five designers with very different stories about how they got their start. Here, they share everything from the details behind their unexpected beginnings to the career advice they wish they had received themselves.

Later, a friend at graduate school asked me to help design Isabella Rossellini’s duplex loft in Tribeca. That was a lucky stroke. I am thrilled to have architects and clients I admire appreciate our work, but I still feel lucky to get each assignment that comes our way. I am continually learning by designing, traveling, reading, and teaching. I am always surprised by how history provides such an endless source of inspiration and surprises.”
