A center hall runs from front to back and is divided into an entrance area and a dining room. To one side of the hall is the living room, a nearly 50-foot-long space with two fireplaces and an ample bay window that faces the lake, while the opposite side of the structure is given over to the kitchen, workroom (where meals are sometimes taken), lounge, and butler’s pantry.

Those expansive windows were among the specific desires of the clients: "We wanted to be able to see sky and horizons, and obviously the lake view is pretty important," one of them says. "And the place needed to look like it had been here for 200 years, which is why we requested antique-style glass in the windows."

Take, for example, the hand-troweled plaster walls or the custom-made raised paneling crafted of reclaimed white oak. The entrance area is paved with well-worn black and white marble. Vintage terra-cotta squares used on the terraces resemble the Indonesian tiles often found on South African floors.

That narrative is supported by soulful European antiques and art, including those picked up by the clients as they have made their way around the world, like the master bedroom’s gleaming Gustavian andirons. The fact that it was such a lengthy project, Booth notes, "allowed us to conscientiously collect rather than having to grab whatever was out there." Among the designer’s favorite finds is the swaggering circa-1740 Baroque painted table in the entrance area, a lofty space as sparely furnished and as raked with light as an Old Master painting. "It sets the tone as soon as you walk in," he says. The box beds in the guest room are another historic touch; McAlpine says they are "a very Dutch thing, like what Vermeer might have slept in."
