While Eleven Experience is known for establishing luxury rental properties in unconventional, hard-to-reach destinations—a chalet in an ancient farming village on the French-Italian border, a 19th-century lodge in the Colorado Rockies—Canal Huis 58 in Amsterdam marks the company’s first foray into urban residences. Located at the convergence of the Brouwersgracht and Herengracht canals in Amsterdam, the four-bedroom canal house brings together the advantages of a luxury villa rental with the service of a hotel.

Every morning, guests wake to the smell of breakfast being prepared by a private chef while Eleven’s signature experiences manager organizes everything from private canal tours on the complimentary Eleven boat and hot-air balloon tours to graffiti lessons from local street artists (all legal, of course) and viewings of a private Rembrandt collection in the home of one of Amsterdam’s most venerable families.

Design firm No. 12 Interiors, run by Blake Pike (the wife of Eleven Experience owner Chad Pike) and Jane Hines, has been careful to retain many of the house’s original features, such as the wood beams and Delft tiles in the kitchen and bath, which are supplemented by bespoke and antique furnishings sourced from Dutch dealers or European markets. The oversize wood bike hanging in the first-floor kitchen is an homage to the preferred method of local transport, while the mirror in the second-floor bar—complete with sofas, cozy seating nooks, and barstools arranged to capitalize on the view of the canal—hails from the 18th century. In the dining room, a large concave mirror creates a feeling of light and space and enables guests to observe canal life out front while standing in the kitchen at the back of the house.

Decorative touches that speak to the house’s centuries-old sense of place include framed pictures of native birds, sourced from a local art and antique print dealer, and luxurious wool and linen fabrics. Though the rooms have modern baths, they all retain a comfortable, cozy feel. The master suite, which spans the entire top floor, includes an antique wardrobe that had to be winched up the front of the property, in keeping with Dutch merchant tradition.
