A California Home Where East Coast Tradition Meets West Coast Cool

L.A. designer Joe Lucas scores big with a Manhattan Beach home built for a pro hockey player and his family

Known for its pristine beaches and laid-back California vibes, Manhattan Beach tends to attract growing families and professional athletes. So when Dustin Brown, the captain of the Los Angeles Kings hockey team, and his wife Nicole were searching for the perfect spot to build their family’s dream home, they turned to the quintessential SoCal community.

The couple enlistedMatt Morris Developmentand道格拉斯浸出体系结构118高手论坛to build the foundation, and Matt Morris quickly referred them to designerJoe Lucasto begin plotting out the interiors. Translating the family’s East Coast roots into their new home on the West Coast, Lucas relied on his talent for curating bold color palettes and durable textiles, most of which are outdoor grade. “This home is California living through and through,” he says. “And the creative process was very fluid and natural. They expressed what was most important to them as a family and where they were willing to take some design risks.” Of course, with four young kids and a penchant for entertaining, the owners had to balance the need for function and an elevated aesthetic that’s on view from the outset.

Lucas kicked things off in the study, which is one of the first areas visible upon entry. With a saturated, deep-blue lacquer on the walls, casings, and built-ins, the space is primed for complementary hues to make their mark, including shades of gray found in the wall-to-wallStarkcarpet and the lush burgundy velvet sofa anchoring the room. “I’m not afraid of color,” says Lucas, “and when my clients aren’t afraid of color, that’s when things get really exciting. Such was the case in this home.” From the study, the project shifted into the dining room, which is open to the rest of the house and acts as a small showroom. “We wanted that room to have a serious wow factor,” Lucas says. “Even though the space doesn’t get used that much per se, it’s still seen all the time and therefore needed to make a statement.” So Lucas opted for an impressive sea-glass chandelier that allows light and air to travel through, a strikingRomowallpaper, and a deeply pigmented wainscoting to outline the perimeter of the space.

But perhaps one of the most personalized parts of the home is the bright and airy entry hall, which features a large skylit staircase and a small round table that was built for a very specific purpose: “The table is designed to one day host the Stanley Cup for one week of the year as it makes its way from teammate to teammate,” says Lucas. Likely a design first for Lucas, the table is the exact measurement required to host the esteemed trophy, which the Kings have won in the past and, of course, covet every year. Luckily for Lucas, he won’t have to wait to count this home as a design win.
