Matthew Williamson’s New Colorful Line of Furniture Is the Ultimate Mood Boost

The fashion designer turned home decor expert is out with his latest pattern-happy effort

“It was a lovely project to work on,” British fashion designer turned homedecor expert extraordinaire Matthew Williamsonsays to AD PRO. He’s calling from Spain, where he currently lives, and where he has been spending the ongoing pandemic period churning out creative and always colorful artistic products. These days, Williamson is more likely to applyhis signature prints to decor items such as versatile traysthan to garments destined to make their way down a runway. Such was the case with his new collection of beautifully ornamented furniture, which was made possible thanks to a collaboration withRoome London.

威廉姆森新贵品牌后伸出via Instagram direct message, it didn’t take too long for him to commit to the proposal. “I had a look at their platform and what they create, and I was really impressed,” he says. At the time, Williamson was in the ongoing process of building out his ownwebsite, and knew that a collection of this sort would add welcome versatility to his portfolio.

His favorite piece from the resultant collection—and the one that he would most like to have in his own home—is a sunburst drinks cabinet. “I wanted to make that piece quite glamorous,” he notes. But for those even casually familiar with the usual furniture sold by Roome London, it’s clear that this and other such designs were a considerable departure. “Their products are very classical and minimal in a sense,” Williamson observes. A moment or two later, he adds of himself, “Even back in fashion, my aim was to create color-drenched [ornamentation], really for the sole purpose of bringing a little bit of joy [to people].”

Today, that sentiment resonates more strongly than ever. But of course, not everyone’s home is filled with brightly painted pieces with which Williamson’s works would easily match. That’s okay. As Williamson notes, he envisions a decorator applying one of his new designs within an “eclectic mix” of furnishings, be they vintage chandeliers or more modern sofas. He adds, “I can see too how they would look very graphic and impactful in a more pared-back space, almost like art work.”

It’s funny that Williamson should use that term, as his next endeavor is a collection of paintings. The process is one that he’s very much been enjoying, and that will no doubt result in another addition to his website. For now, though, it’s the pieces of Roome London furniture that are most readily available to others as well as himself. Reflecting on their potential impact within his own abode, he adds with a laugh, “They would just join the merry explosion of color and pattern.”
