If you’ve already caught up on the first episode ofReplace This Space, a new AD It Yourself video series that follows designer Erick Garcia as he executes big-impact makeovers, there’s a new franchise for you to get lost in. CalledRoom Refresh, the show follows a range of designers as they transform single rooms in just two and a half hours. Garcia is the star of the first episode, now live on YouTube, in which the designer overhauls Jessica Harris’s Brooklyn living room to make it more attractive and functional. After this premiere, other designers will join the series to work their magic, giving us all a chance to be wowed by their expertise.

Measuring 13’9” by 5’11”, the living room highlighted in the video doesn’t offer a whole lot of design possibilities. Harris and her partner needed a workspace, and were eager to get better storage for their belongings and many books. Garcia was able to smartly rearrange the furniture so that the desk setup wasn’t the main visual focal point. He added a console and open shelves for storage purposes, a rug that would make the space feel bigger rather than smaller, and vertical elements like tallplantsanddrapesto draw the eye up. He kept a few of Harris’s favorite furnishings—such as thedesk chairand the velvety blue sofa—while replacing other pieces that weren’t working as well (such as the not-so-memorable desk).

BEFORE:Jessica Harris’s compact Brooklyn living room.

AFTER:Erick Garcia spent a few hours toiling away, and the space looked completely different.
