Nilufar Gallery Pops Up in Hollywood
An infusion of Italian design has arrived in Los Angeles through February 20 thanks toSQUAT,an installation from Milan's influential Nilufar Gallery organized with support from the Italian Cultural Institute, Los Angeles. The setting at 830 North Highland Avenue features multiple vignettes showcasing significant vintage pieces juxtaposed with works by contemporary voices in Italian and international design. Carlo Scarpa, Ettore Sottsass, Derek Castiglioni, and Michael Anastassiades are among the designers represented.
"I wanted to break the mold, creating a unique space celebrating modernity," Nilufar founder Nina Yashar tells AD PRO. "I chose Los Angeles because it’s a place where I see that my research and new ideas are embraced with enthusiasm and positive energy." Public talks taking place during the exhibition run will feature designerBethan Laura Wood, Brooke Hodge of thePalm Springs Art Museum, architectMassimiliano Locatelli, curator-writer Marion Vignal, and Yashar.
Compartès Chocolate Café and Production Facility Opens
Master chocolatier Jonathan Grahm of Compartès, who previously tapped Kelly Wearstler to design his company's whimsical Westfield Century Cityboutique,打开e doors to his 6,000-plus-square-foot chocolate shop and production facility late last year. The multipurpose operation, which is available for private events and chocolate tastings, is located at 516 North La Brea Avenue. Grahm handled design duties, incorporating custom details like the 14-foot-high arched brass doors that are inspired by the Hollywood Bowl.
Materials & Applications 2020 Winter Program at MAK Center Mackey Apartments
On January 18, M&A and the MAK Center for Art & Architecture will presentStaging Construction,a multiphase exhibition curated by M&A director Jia Yi Gu. This multidisciplinary effort features a pavilion entitledScoring, Buildingat the Rudolph Schindler–designedMackey Apartmentsthrough February 29. Following a 2018 design competition for the installation, M&A selected the project by Michelle JaJa Chang, Harvard Graduate School of Design professor and founder of design practice JaJa Co. Forthcoming programming includes architect Neil M. Denari's in situ electronic music performance on February 1, and lectures by Alex Maymind and Tommy Hill to be held on Thursday, March 12, at 6:30 pm at the M&A Storefront at 1313 Sunset Boulevard.
